my story

Pianist and vocalist, Alexandria James completed a BMus at Wits University majoring in composition and community music. She grew up in a house filled with music and began playing the piano when he was 11, moving to the National School of the Arts at 16. Some of his greatest influences include jazz giants Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Chick Corea, and, more recently, James Blake and Amy Winehouse. 


As a teacher

About her teaching

Alexandria feels challenged to assist his students to achieve. Her highlights as a performer include sharing the stage with bands and musicians including BCUC, Boxer and Bye Beneco. Her ability to sing is a gift, in Alexandria’s opinion.  As a teenager music helped him develop social skills and overcome anxiety. She believes that music teaches discipline, is a great stress release and music-making has the capacity to bring validation and recognition and break down barriers. 


Alexandria explores psychology in order to understand how the human brain behaves when creating and engage with music. Her long-term ambition is to train and practice as a music therapist.
